Silkscreen Printing & The Role of Registration Marks

Silkscreen printing is one of the most popular techniques for packaging decoration, but it comes with specific limitations. While highly effective, it is best suited for single-color designs.

The Multi-Color Challenge

When a design requires two or more colors, the printing process becomes significantly more challenging. To properly align multiple layers of ink, the process requires a physical guide known as a registration mark.

  • What is a Registration Mark? It is a small indentation on the bottom of a plastic container.
  • What is its Purpose? It allows the printing machine to register, lock, and line up the component in a precise direction, regardless of the container's shape. This exact positioning is what makes multi-color printing possible.

Key Factors for Precise Printing

The more colors a design requires, the higher the difficulty of the print job. A successful, accurately aligned multi-color register print relies heavily on the following variables:

  • Mechanical Precision: Quality of the registration marks, the locking mechanism, and the print machine itself.
  • Screen & Ink Dynamics: The tension of the screen, the mechanics of the ink squishing process, and the specific viscosity of the ink.
  • Project Scope: The overall complexity of the artwork and the total quantity being printed.
